I remember my first time seeing Michael Jackson on Tv I was about 11 and my dad points at the screen and says for me to watch this guy move! He said “His legs are like rubber bands!” He had his glitter top and glitter black slacks with the whitest socks I had ever seen.. he tilted his hat and began his moonwalk. I don’t think I will ever forget that for as long as I live. My father was amazed at him and began to tell me how he was so talented and his brothers were all in the band. I payed attention after that. After some time, Thriller came out and I don’t have to tell you anymore because you already know. He was very influential in the 80’s for many reasons.. I was in Germany at the time of the Bad album release date and stood in line to get my record. That’s right, vinyl. My father gave it a listen but was a bit hesitant because it wasn’t the same guy he remembered but somehow, he still got us concert tickets to see him. I was super excited and there we were watching this guy do what he does…LIVE! I had a small polaroid camera and I took pix but he was so far away..I do remember looking into my plastic view finder lens and holding down the button to snap a picture and he looked right in my direction as I snapped it. After getting the film developed he looked to be pointing right at me and my father couldn’t believe it.. Im going to find that photo tonight. The point being, this is just a small story of the effect he had on me, and I’m sure everyone has a fond memory. I wanted to share mine in his honor. Think what you want about him but he really was very influential in the shaping of modern music. My son started getting into his 80’s songs and became a big 9 year old fan..He called me last night while Michael was in the hospital in the “coma” state.. I told my son to hang on and believe he will pull thru. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen and I have the whole weekend to explain to him in a subtle way that things happen for a reason. R.I.P.
